Some have said that if you want to enjoy all of the pleasures and excitement of visiting every foreign port all around the world, just vacation in America because we have it all. And to be sure, you can literally experience almost any part of the world right here in the heart of the United States of America. It makes sense that the cultures of dozens if not hundreds of countries have been recreated beautifully in the borders of The United States. After all, this country was comprised almost entirely of immigrants from every country across the globe. And as each new immigrant group made their home here in America, they found their countrymen so they could live near each other, if for no other reason than to hear their nature tongues spoken. And within those communities, the cultures of "the old country" were beautifully reproduced to make those immigrants get over a little of their homesickness for the familiar and for home.

For over twenty-five years, my family managed the sugar plantation land of West Maui, the same land that is currently being carved up by developers. My grandfather, Keith Tester, was the plantation manager of Pioneer Mill from 1959-1965. My dad, K.B. Tester Jr. was a field supervisor from 1975-1986. Not only is this land an integral part of my families history on Maui, but a place that is as connected to who I am, as my surfboard's leash is connected to me. No matter where I travel, I'm always drawn back home to Maui and those majestic West Maui Mountains. Each year the changes are more and more pronounced in Maui. When I returned home from my first year of college, I was blown away by the arrival of K-Mart on Dairy Road. Little did I know that the floodgates to the big box stores had just flown wide open for more to come. Not long after, Maui Market Place arrived with Office Max, Old Navy, Borders, and Pier One. I'm as big of a fan as the next for a cheap place to shop for food, especially in Maui.
Swaziland is one of the smallest countries in the south east of Africa. She is landlocked and shares borders with Mozambique to the east and South Africa to the north, south and west. Swaziland has a population of approximately 1 million people and there are two official languages which are SiSwati and English which is widely spoken. Swaziland has a thriving tourist industry in part due to its natural beauty and established transport infrastructure. If you want to travel to Swaziland, it is advisable to do so in May to August when the temperatures are high during the day and low during the nights in June and July. The warm months are from October through April during which most rain falls in heavy thunderstorms. Travel to Mbabane and pop in for a meal. The restaurants here have an excellent selection of dishes and a good level of service. Some of the foods include seafood especially prawns cooked in Portuguese style, meat stew, maize meal, stamped mealies and roasted corn on cob. There is a good selection of spirits, beer and wines.
Zymurgeeks at the Capitola Book Cafe In an effort to create community and to support a local business, the Zymurgeek homebrew club http://www.zymurgeeks.org/ gave a presentation Wednesday night at the Capitola Book Cafe http://www.capitolabookcafe.com/ drawing a large and supportive crowd. With the rapid expansion of on-line book sales through businesses like Amazon and mega retailers like Borders, the small local book stores are fighting an up hill battle to keep their customer loyalty and entice new patrons. As unfortunate as this is, it is becoming the norm regarding small, independent retailers of all kinds and can be seen in every town in America. It seems the days of small town America are over. I'm not going to belabor a point that has been hashed and re-hashed in the daily news and blog forums and is obvious to most but, I will point out that when a person buys goods on line or from a gianormous box store, the money spent leaves the community, etching away at the local commerce.
