For over twenty-five years, my family managed the sugar plantation land of West Maui, the same land that is currently being carved up by developers. My grandfather, Keith Tester, was the plantation manager of Pioneer Mill from 1959-1965. My dad, K.B. Tester Jr. was a field supervisor from 1975-1986. Not only is this land an integral part of my families history on Maui, but a place that is as connected to who I am, as my surfboard's leash is connected to me. No matter where I travel, I'm always drawn back home to Maui and those majestic West Maui Mountains. Each year the changes are more and more pronounced in Maui. When I returned home from my first year of college, I was blown away by the arrival of K-Mart on Dairy Road. Little did I know that the floodgates to the big box stores had just flown wide open for more to come. Not long after, Maui Market Place arrived with Office Max, Old Navy, Borders, and Pier One. I'm as big of a fan as the next for a cheap place to shop for food, especially in Maui.
